Instagram Bios: How to optimise yours

An Instagram bio is the first thing that your followers will see when they land on your Instagram page (aside from your profile picture), so it’s crucial to make an impact when creating yours. They act as a portfolio for your business, giving them a quick snapshot into what you’re about in a short, snappy few sentences.

It might seem like a straightforward task; a few words about your brand and perhaps a link to your website, but your Instagram bio is a great opportunity to make an amazing first impression. The more thoughtful you are about your bio, the better chance you have of followers clicking on your pages.

Want to learn more? Read on for our top tips on how to optimise your Instagram bio.

Get straight to the point

There’s only enough space for 150 characters in an Instagram bio, which means you must use a snappy, informative paragraph to describe what your business offers. If you offer multiple services, think about bullet pointing each product. If you run an eCommerce business, take time to make your bio informative without it being too lengthy.

Take Rightmove as an excellent example, they describe exactly what they do in one concise sentence, and provide a compressed link that takes followers to their property blog page.

Use the name field to describe your business

If your username already utilises your brand name, consider customising the name field in your Instagram bio to describe what your business offers. This way, when people use search terms to find a business like yours, you will appear in the searches under those keywords. For example, our Instagram account is ‘Digital Marketing Bristol’.

Include a link

Since links don’t function in post captions, your Instagram bio is the best place to include a call to action to your website, products or latest promotion on Instagram. Your Instagram URL can be changed as frequently as you wish, so if you want to push a short term promotion, this is a great place to do so. External sites such as Linktree give you the option to keep all of your important website links in one place, making it easier for users to shop your products, contact your team or take advantage of your latest offers directly from your IG page. This is a great way to help your followers find all of the products featured in your Instagram feed in one place, and makes shopping a lot quicker!

Use emojis

Don’t be afraid to use emojis, they can help to make your bio look more interesting and give personality to your profile. We’ve used emojis to list our services to make it a little more exciting.

Brand hashtags

Your brand Instagram Bio is the perfect place to let your customers know how to tag you in their images. Putting a unique hashtag in your bio will encourage your followers to hashtag their images when they post about your business. That way, you can repost relevant user-generated images, and build trust with your audience.

Lucy and Yak are the perfect examples of a brand that uses its own hashtags to get its customers to tag them in their clothing images. This way, they can repost the images to their feed, building trust with new and existing customers through user-generated content.
